Description

Cramp, Dr. Arthur J. Nostrums and Quackery: Articles on the Nostrum Evil, Quackery and  Allied Matters Affecting the Public Health, Reprinted, With, or Without Modifications, from the Journal of the American Medical Association. (Chicago: American Medical Association, 1921) – Volume 2

Octavo. 832 pages. Hardcover. Bound in dark blue/green cloth-covered boards stamped in gilt on spine and and in blind and gilt on front cover. Illustrated with copied of advertisements of the period and facsimiles of documents and letters appearing in court cases revolving around dome of the patent medicines causing the most damage. In a time of renewed quackery, a valuable resource.

Condition: VG. Some wrinkling to cloth on front cover, darkening to edges of text block, Two splotches of a dark substance on fore-edge of text block (darker than in picture). Signature on front paste-down. Light bumping to corners and spine ends. Some spotting and color loss on both covers, though worst on front cover.  I suspect that this was kept in a lab somewhere.

Over the span of 27 years starting in 1911, the Journal of the American Medical Society released three volumes of information regarding Nostrums (Patent Medicines, Snake Oil Medicines), Quack Therapies and such previously published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).  A valuable addition to a library of medical history to the library of a bottle collector.
