Description

Dostoyevsky, Feodor M.  Crime and Punishment: A Russian Realistic Novel. (Thomas V. Crowell & Co: New York, [1886]). First American Edition.

Large 12mo (duodecimo), not quite octavo. (5.25 x 7.75 inches).  First edition with Crowell’s logo on title page, original cloth in brown, with the advs at the end listing only Crime and Punishment among Dostoyevsky’s works for sale, and Insult and Injury along with Recollections of a Dead House noted as “in press”. This is the first translation of Crime and Punishment into English, done by Fred Whishaw (14 March 1854 – 8 July 1934).

Condition: Good with edge wear to boards and spine strip, which is heavily worn at top and bottom. Corners lightly bumped with a little wear through on all four corners. Rear cover shows a splotch of white, red and black (see photos). Printing on spine is faded, but spine is straight with no lean. Book opens easily to some pages, but sewing appears solid. Hinges solid and undamaged.  Front pastedown has a K written in pencil and the remains of something resembling a packing peanut. Advertisements and rear free endpaper have a couple of tears, while the rear endpaper also has a few chips on the edge. A nice copy with a hint of mustiness.
