Octavo (8vo). Two volumes. Volume 1: [v]-xv, 554 pages; Volume 2: xi, 428 pages. Hardbound. Three-quarter bound, leather with marbled (Achatmarmorpapier) boards. Spines show four raised bands and are stamped in gilt on a matching leather label. Marbled end-papers.

Condition
:  Very good+. Clean and tight. Hinges not cracked. While leather is in good, though scuffed, condition, the outside hinges are starting to crack at top and bottom of covers.  Spine is sunned.
POUSSIN, Guillaume Tell Lavalloe (poos-sang), French soldier, born in France about 1795; died after 1850. He accompanied General Simon Bernard to the United States after the fall of Napoleon, and on 6 March, 1817, became assistant topographical engineer in the United States Army, with rank of captain, and aide to Gen. Bernard. He was promoted topographical engineer, with rank of major, 15 January, 1829, but resigned, 31 July, 1832. He had become a naturalized citizen of this country, but returned to France, where he took an active part in the establishment of the republic of 1848, and in 1848-‘9 he was its minister to the United States.
Among other works he published “Travaux d’amdliorations in-terieures projetes ou executes par le gouvernement general des Etats-Unis d’Amerique de 1824 a 1831” (Paris, 1834) ; “Considerations sur le principe demo-cratique qui rdgit l’Union Amerieaine, et de la pos-sibilite de son application a d’autres Etats” (1841) ; and “De la puissance Americaine : origine, institutions, esprit, politique, ressources des Etats-Unis” (2 vols., 1843; English translation by E.
