Quarto. 80 pages. Chromolithograph glazed pictorial boards. Poetry and short stories directed towards children and illustrated with many steel engravings. Only 6 copies available in libraries throughout the world and only one available online (at $300).
Condition: Good. Scuffed and edge worn, as expected in a child’s book but complete and with no writing. First free end paper is loose but attached, chipping to some pages. End papers are toned and appear to be made of pulp paper because they are starting to become brittle, but text block appears to not be pulp and in reasonably good condition. Spine appears to have been covered by a glazed chromolithograph as well, but that has been worn down.
“Mary Dow Brine, 1816-1913, poet, author and lyricist. New Yorker. Many poems and children’s books published by numerous important publishers. Best known for her poem, “Somebody’s Mother,” which can be found in its entirety on a number of Internet sites. Wrote the lyrics for “Hearts and Flowers,” a late 19th-century piano piece that did not sell well until she provided the lyrics for it after which it became a hit.”- Alyce Hand Benham
